Understanding and Responding to Sexual Violence


University Certificate in Professional Development

This course has been developed and is delivered in partnership with Redcar and East Cleveland Women’s Aid: Rape Crisis Service to provide an informed background for those whose work involves responding to sexual violence (rape and sexual assault). It will be of particular benefit to voluntary sector workers, practitioners and professionals working in Rape Crisis Centres, Sexual Assault Referral Centres and others whose remit includes responding to survivors of sexual violence.


In broad terms the course aims to:

  • Provide an up-to-date background understanding of sexual violence tailored to meet the needs of voluntary sector workers, professionals and practitioners.
  • Facilitate understanding of the contemporary legislative framework; police and criminal justice responses to survivors of sexual violence; investigation and prosecution processes
  • To promote best practice in the provision of support, counselling and advocacy in respect of rape and sexual assault
  • Through the award of a certificate, validate the specialist knowledge required by professional practitioners and voluntary sector workers who remit includes the provision of support and advocacy services in relation to rape and sexual assault

On successful completion of the course students will:

  • have developed an understanding of the nature, extent and impact of sexual violence and sexual exploitation
  • have knowledge of relevant and contemporary research findings
  • have an awareness of the sensitivities involved in this field of work
  • have an understanding of survivors resistance, coping and survival strategies
  • be familiar with changing legal, police and criminal justice responses to sexual violence
  • understand the roles of counselling, support work and advocacy
  • be able to apply their knowledge within a professional context.

Course Structure

The course involves five full days of study at the University. It runs three times a year, and is delivered through a mixture of private study, lectures, seminars and workshops using a range of teaching methods appropriate to adult learners studying in a small group context. It draws on the growing body of research and theoretical understanding and explores the ways these informs best practice responses to survivors.

Led by Prof Jill Radford, Professor of Criminology and Women’s Studies, the course is delivered by a team of specialist tutors and experienced counsellors and advocates from Redcar and Cleveland Rape Crisis Service

Students who successfully complete the course will be awarded the University Certificate in Professional Development (Understanding and Responding to Sexual Violence). The certificate attracts 30 credits within the University’s Credit Accumulation Transfer Scheme (CATS) and so can count towards a degree.

To achieve the certificate award, candidates must complete and pass all parts of the assessment. This includes:

  • a written knowledge check based on preparatory readings
  • a presentation and facilitation of a short group discussion, with a written report relating to a relevant aspect of domestic violence intervention
  • a written report based on a case study.
