What can women expect from the centre?Women will find a comfortable, welcoming place where they can talk to professional, skilled women in order to obtain advice and support. We appreciate that this may be the first time a woman has spoken to anyone, therefore, one of the central tenements of the centre is that she will only tell her story once and in complete confidence. The centre also ensures that the policies and procedures of the centre are available and accessible to all women using the project.
We acknowledge diversity within the community and have developed partnerships in order to meet the needs of all women who want to use the centre.
Women are offered support from directly employed specialist workers which, enables them to make fully informed decisions and choices. Women are also offered support and guidance in relation to legal matters and the civil injunctive process and are supported throughout all stages of legal proceedings.
In respect of those clients who require civil injunctive remedies and who fall outside of the public funding criteria, My Sister’s Place provides the assistance in accessing the legal route to protection known as the Do It Yourself Injunction.
The Legal Advice workers who are employed full time at the centre process the DIY Injunction and are also able to represent the client in Court if required. This effectively allows the client to access legal protection without incurring heavy legal fees.
My Sister’s Place is the only domestic violence project within the North East which provides legal advice and we have already successfully obtained 6 DIY injunctions. |
